Olympia Beauty's main beauty stage was the arena for Antonia Hawke, the SBA's founder and CEO to remind all those involved in the beauty industry of their responsibility to their clients and employees to practise "safe beauty". Held at London's Olympia 19 and 20 September 2010, Antonia, in a short presentation called "What is 'Safe Beauty' and why is it important to you and your customers?" said "Hygiene is an important part of any daily professional practice and particularly the makeup and beauty industries. Dangers of cross-contamination through unhygienic application of makeup and beauty treatments can cause of host of health problems through the transferrance of bacteria and viruses across products, applicators and skin.
"Makeup, cosmetics and beauty should be not be like a game of Russian roulette in that you have no idea what you might or might not catch from your practitioner. Unless the indsustry wakes up and takes serious charge of its responsibility to teaching and enforcing safe beauty practice across all sectors and in all channels, then the industry is seriously laking in responsibility to its consumers. Health, hygiene and safety of its customers should be the number one priority for any practitioner. Consumers are currently blissfully aware of the hidden dangers that lie behind the shimmer, shine and gloss of the makeup and beauty industries.
"Practioners wouldn't share their tooth brush and if, at a doctor's surgery, the physician didn't use a syringe taken from a new sealed pack, patients would say 'stop' as they would know instinctively it's wrong and they understand the high risk of infection from cross-contamination. So why is it this sector, anything seems to go?"
Antonia was on hand at the SBA stand to speak with educators and students about the importance of understanding what is and why safe beauty is essential to both practitioner and consumer and shared the SBA's top tips for easy implementation whether as a mobile hair and beauty practitioner, an educational establishment or major cosmetics brand.
"Students are a key part of changing the industry for a better and safer future. Amongst the SBA's objectives is to implement a new industry code of conduct with health and hygiene at its core,. It is up to educators and educational establishments to ensure that appropriate and sufficient training is given in all areas of industry and more importantly, critical problem areas such as double-dipping and bad personal hygiene (clean hands) are constantly monitored and corrected on the spot And, for those working in the indistry, it is their responsibility to lead by example and not hide behind the inertia as well as the shinner and the shine that hides a hidden danger."
