The winner was Alexis Dolman from Newcastle College with her winning interpretation of the owl from the much loved rhyme, The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear. The judges were unanimous in choosing Alexis as the winner. Antonia commented on Alexis's awareness of hygiene in her application of makeup and encouraged all five of the finalists to put SAFE BEAUTY at the top of the list of learning and said, "It's very easy when learning the creative application of makeup to forget the basics. One of the Safe Beauty Association's goals is to engage with all educators as well as students to ensure that appropriate safe beauty teaching is part of every makeup and beauty curriculum and sufficient emphasis is g
iven to this crucial subject matter. All too often, hygiene and the practise of safe beauty is addressed in one paragraph in a book, or in a ten minute presentation at the beginning of a course. It's time for educational establishments to make a change in teaching and encourage specific hygiene and safe beauty training as well as continual learning during practical work. Teachers must correct students there and then when unacceptable practise takes place and, of course, lead by example. It's time to take a proactive approach to the subject matter and address the issues head on."
The competition's winner, Alexis aged 24, is studying theatrical and media makeup after having taken a degree in photography and said "I'm really excited about winning and about the work experience opportunity. I'd love to be able to work in makeup design on feature films and stage productions to use the visual skills I've already learned on both my courses".
Emma Doherty, Jane Iredale's head makeup artist presented Alexis with her prizes - £500 worth of Jane Iredale makeup kits for both herself and her college, a chance to spend a day with Alyn Waterman on the set of BBC TV's Hustle as well as a gift voucher for SAFE BEAUTY makeup tools and essentials from www.thepromakeupshop.com and a year's student and college membership from the Safe Beauty Association (www.safebeautyassocation.com).
